US Librarian of Congress to speak at iConference 2019

 

The organizers of iConference 2019 are pleased to announce that Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has agreed to speak at our upcoming conference. Hayden is the 14th Librarian of Congress, and the first woman and the first African American to lead the national library. Her keynote address is a welcome and appropriate addition to the Washington DC-based event.

With the announcement of Hayden’s keynote address, the iConference slate of speakers is now complete. In addition to Hayden, conference delegates will hear from Kentaro Toyama of Microsoft Research India, and Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive.

We encourage everyone to finalize their plans to attend iConference 2019. Conference registration is now open, with discounted early rates available through January 18, 2019. A limited supply of specially priced rooms are available at the conference hotel; lodging details can be found on our venue page, along with additional information about travel and visas.

About Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden
Carla Hayden’s undergraduate studies took place at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and she earned her a master’s and doctorate from the University of Chicago Graduate Library School. She began her library career at the Chicago Public Library, and then moved on to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Following this, she became CEO of Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland from 1993 until 2016. She also served president of the American Library Association (ALA) in 2003 and 2004. Hayden was nominated to the Librarian of Congress position by President Barack Obama on February 24, 2016; her nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 13, and she was sworn in on September 14, 2016.

About the iConference
iConference 2019 will take place March 31 – April 3, 2019, in Washington DC under the banner theme “Inform | Include | Inspire.” The event is presented by the iSchool at the University of Maryland, College Park in collaboration with Syracuse University iSchool and the iSchool at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Sponsors include the Computing Research Association, Emerald Publishing, Elsevier and MDPI. The iConference is open to any and all information scholars and researchers, regardless of institutional affiliation.

An annual presentation of the iSchools organization since 2005, the iConference brings together scholars and researchers from around the world to examine critical information issues in contemporary society. An openness to new ideas and research fields in information science is a primary characteristics of the event.
