Video Contest

The iSchools Video Contest charged entrants with creating a short promotional video positioning the information field and information schools as exciting, new programs that educate undergraduate and/or graduate students to solve the information problems of the 21st century. The competition ran from September, 2015, through the end of January, 2016.

Over a dozen entries were received from across the globe – participants included students, faculty, staff, and alumni from nine different iSchools in six countries. After careful review from a panel of iSchool leaders, the iSchools Organization is pleased to announce the following results:

First Place ($5,000): 
Unleash the Power

Second Place ($2,500):
iSchool: School for This Century
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill – Kenan-Flagler Business School

Kevin McCraney is an instructional designer at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, working with the EMBA and OneMBA programs. His background is in philosophy, literature, and teaching English as a second language. He has made videos since high school, programmed computers since middle school, and made music his entire life. Currently, he’s using open-access curricula to teach himself data science. Outside of his professional ambitions, he enjoys international travel, cycling, and linguistics.

Third Place ($1,000):
What is an iSchool?
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill – School of Information and Library Science

Nico Carver is an assistant librarian and coordinator for services in the Student Multimedia Design Center at the University of Delaware Library. He is a specialist in all things multimedia including photography, video, and web design. In 2013, Nico was deemed an Emerging Leader by the New Media Consortium for his research into how people learn computer software. His background is in experimental filmmaking, which he studied at Hampshire College. He holds an M.S. in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Fourth Place:
My iSchool
University of California, Irvine – Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences
The “My iSchool” video was created by the Communications Office from UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS). The communications team includes Robert Farmer, principal producer; Khue Bui, graphic design student worker; and Matt Miller, ICS director of communications. The video was inspired by UCI Informatics Professors Gary Olson and Josh Tanenbaum.

Fifth Place:
Viewing the World Amid Remote Mountains
Wuhan University – School of Information Management

Panlei Zhang’s video is about a Chinese college student’s experience as a volunteer teacher. She went to a remote mountain village to lead the students down the road of knowledge by teaching them how to collect and use information independently. In this way, information becomes a channel in which they connect with the outside world, a informationalized and fast-developing world. The video reflects the current situation and changes in assistance education in many regions in China. Besides, the protagonist also begin to reflect what information represents and how it changes our lives and the whole society.

The above honorees were formally recognized at iConference 2016 in Philadelphia. The iSchools would like to thank everyone who submitted a video for their participation.
