    The advance program agenda for iConference 2022 is now available on the conference website. Presenters seeking their sessions can search (CTRL+F) on author name, submission number or title fragment. The schedule is preliminary and subject to change.

    iConference 2022 is a global event with sessions scheduled around the clock. The advance agenda provides times synced to three primary time zones. Participants will need to factor for their local time zones. View schedule here.

    Also, the conference’s Early Registration phase ends on Sunday, Jan. 23. Standard registration fees will apply starting Jan. 24, and are higher. Register early for the best rate. Register here.

    With the coming of the new year, the iSchools organization will transition to a new slate of officers, regional chairs and board members for 2022. The organization welcomes the following new leadership, and also thanks all of our outgoing leaders for their past donations of time and expertise.

    Officers

    Sanda Erdelez (pictured) of Simmons University will begin her term as iSchools Chair for 2022-2024. Gobinda Chowdhury of the University of Strathclyde will move to the position of immediate Past Chair. The new Chair-Elect will be Gillian Oliver of Monash University. Eric Meyer of University of Texas at Austin retains the position of Treasurer. The organization’s Executive Director is Michael Seadle of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

    Regional Chairs

    Keith Marzullo of the University of Maryland retains his position of Regional Chair for the Americas, spanning North and South America. Atsuyuki Morishima of the University of Tsukuba will become Chair of the Asia Pacific region, which includes Asia and Oceania. Koraljka Golub of Linnaeus University will become chair of the Europe / Africa region. 

    Board of Directors

    The new Board of Directors members for the Americas will includes: Kimiz Dalkir of McGill University; Anind K. Dey of the University of Washington; and Charles Isbell of Georgia Tech. In the Europe / Africa region, the new Board of Directors member will be Josep Cobarsí Morales of the Open University of Catalonia. And in a reflection of the organization's ongoing growth in Asia Pacific, the region will now have two Board of Directors members representing the region; the those new Board of Directors members will be Wonsik "Jeff" Shim of Sungkyunkwan University and Lihong Zhou of Wuhan University.

    As this transition unfolds transition, the iSchools also thank all outgoing regional chairs and board members for their dedicated service to the organization. This includes: Peter Bath of the University of Sheffield; Kristin Eschenfelder of the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Tom Finholt of the University of Michigan; Joon Lee of Seoul National University; Gary Marchionini of the University of North Carolina; António Lucas Soares of the University of Porto; and Bin Zhang of Renmin University of China. 

    The iSchools also thank Sam Oh of Sungkyunkwan University (iSchools Chair 2018 – 2020), whose term as immediate Past Chair will come to a close. Prof. Oh retains his honorary position of iSchools Ambassador.

    The organizers of iConference 2022 have announced the slate of keynote speakers for their upcoming information conference, which takes place Feb. 28 – Mar. 4.

    As befits an international gathering of information scholars and researchers, these highly regarded speakers hail from iSchools around the globe. The speakers include:

    Shigeo Sugimoto, professor emeritus at iSchool-member University of Tsukuba’s Faculty of Library, Information and Media Science, where he served for more than 35 years. Sugimoto earned his PhD at Kyoto University. His research interests span technological and theoretical aspects of metadata in cultural and historical domains, including intangible cultural heritage, media arts, sports and natural disasters.

    Professor Helen Margetts of the University of Oxford’s Mansfield College and iSchools-member Oxford Internet Institute. A political scientist specializing in the relationship between digital technology and government, politics and public policy, she is an advocate for the potential of multi-disciplinarity and computational social science for our understanding of political behavior and development of public policy in a digital world.

    Batya Friedman, professor in the Information School at the University of Washington. She is a pioneer in value sensitive design (VSD), an approach to account for human values in the design of information systems. First developed in human-computer interaction, VSD has since been used in information management, human-robotic interaction, computer security, civil engineering, applied philosophy, and land use and transportation.

    iConference 2022 is presented by the iSchools organization and jointly hosted by the iSchools at Kyushu University, University College Dublin, and University of Texas at Austin.

    The organizers of iConference 2022 are pleased to announce the finalists for this year’s Best Papers and Posters competitions. Five finalists in each category have been selected as representing the most outstanding of the many submissions received. 

    This year’s finalists once again demonstrate breadth of quality information research being conducted at iSchools and other institutions worldwide. The work of these finalists will be presented along with all other accepted submissions at iConference 2022, which takes place online Feb. 28 – Mar. 4. The winners will be announced at that time.

    Best Full Research Paper

    The winner in this prestigious category will receive the Lee Dirks Award for Best Full Research Paper and prize of $1,000 USD, courtesy of Springer and the iSchools Organization. The finalists, listed alphabetically by title:

    An entertaining Science Slam will be one of the many socially interactive events presented during iConference 2022. The Science Slam will consist of funny, captivating and interactive videos from European iSchools that serve to demystify science and make it more accessible to a general audience. 

    In preparation for the event, the conference’s EU Social Activity Chair Ulrike Liebner invites the submission of 8-minute videos that present a research project of findings in a fun and engaging way. Initial submissions are due Jan. 24. From this pool of submissions, five finalists will be selected for presentation during the conference’s special Science Slam session that is open to all iConfereence participants. The audience will choose the overall winner. The winner will receive a complimentary registration to iConference 2023 next year.

    Refer to the Science Slam Call for Submissions for eligibility and submission information. Science Slam video submissions are due Jan. 24.

    Additional social activities spanning other regions will be announced in the coming weeks. iConference 2022 will take place Feb. 28 – Mar. 4. Conference registration is now open, with discounted early rates available through Jan. 23.

    The 2022 International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM 2022) will be held will be held June 23-24 at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Germany. This 17th event in the ICKM series will provide researchers and practitioners from all over the world a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas concerning theoretical and practical aspects of Knowledge Management. The 2022 theme is, “Knowledge, Uncertainty and Risks: From individual to global scale”

    The conference has issued a Call for Papers with submission deadline of Feb. 1, 2022. See website for full details. ICKM is organized by the International Council on Knowledge Management.

    The journal Library and Information Science Research seeks articles on the current state-of-the-art in information creation research. Selected articles will be included in a special issue focused on advances in research on information creation, to be published in July 2022.

    Initial submissions are due Jan.10, 2022, and will be peer reviewed. Full details are available in the journal’s Call for Papers.

    Many of us miss the days of in-person conferences, where the flow of ideas and face-to-face networking creates a wonderful and personal dynamic. If you fall in that category, you’ll be pleased to learn that while the global health situation dictates a virtual format for iConference 2022, the organizers have taken significant steps toward enhancing opportunities for interpersonal connections and dynamic networking during our five-day information conference.

    For starters we have the Event Feed, a live ongoing discussion housed on every user’s conference dashboard. Think of the Event Feed a private social media channel, just for conference goers. Participants can use this universal venue to debate the finer points of a keynote address, elaborate on potential applications of research presentations, or pose thoughtful questions to the collective attendees.

    For more direct engagement, we offer Round Tables, a virtual venue for exploring topics with your fellow conference-goers. It’s like adding you own interactive session to our conference program. As a participant, you can initiate as many Round Tables as you wish, and on any topic, ranging from academic areas of study to pressing social issues to personal hobbies. And of course, you can use the Event Feed to announce your Round Table and invite participation.

    We also have several outgoing Social Activities Chairs who will be dedicated to fostering engagement at the conference. These chairs will initiate a number of contests and promotions throughout the conference. Watch for their announcements and invitations in the Event Feed, and feel free to reach out to them directly if you have a suggestion.

    Of course, we realize that intense engagement is not for everyone, and some find it draining to be “on” all the time. All our social engagement features are opt-in, and you are free to take part (or not) as you wish. The iConference also welcomes those who prefer to remain on the virtual sidelines as keen observers.

    iConference 2022 will take place Feb. 28 – Mar. 4, and will include nearly 100 peer reviewed research presentations, as well numerous interactive events, workshops, and keynote addresses. Registration is now open, with discounted early rates available through Jan. 23; standard rates apply thereafter.     Information and Knowledge Organisation in Digital Humanities is a new publication exploring the role of knowledge organisation in the digital humanities, authored by Koraljka Golub, and Ying-Hsang Liu. By focusing on how information is described, represented and organized in both research and practice, this work furthers the transdisciplinary nature of digital humanities.

    Including contributions from Asia, Australis, Europe, North America and the Middle East, the volume explores the potential uses of, and challenges involved in, applying the organisation of information and knowledge in the various areas of digital humanities. Learn more

    A collaboration of schools in the US and Japan will soon present a symposium titled Data Curation and Information Management in the Age of Digital Transformation.

    The program highlights the partnerships between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and Kyushu University (Kyushu) faculty on meeting the research and education challenges posed by the present-day information deluge. The colloquium is convened within the framework of the collaborative explorations amongst the School of Information Sciences (Illinois), the Graduate School of Integrated Frontier Science (Kyushu), the University and Grainger Engineering Libraries (Illinois), and the University Library (Kyushu). 

    The symposium will take place Wednesday, Dec. 8, 6:30-8:00 pm US Central Time; this corresponds to Thursday, Dec. 9, 9:00-11:30 am Japan Standard Time. 

    The program will consist of eight sessions co-moderated by J. Stephen Downie of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Emi Ishita of Kyushu University.
