The iSchools welcome Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) to the organization’s worldwide membership. The JBNU iSchool spans two departments, the Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) and Department of Records and Archives Management (RAM). It is one of seven iSchools members in Korea. There are now 123 institutions in the iSchools membership.
JBNU LIS was established in 1979 and now offers a bachelor's program, three master's programs, and a doctoral program; the department is headed by Soojung Kim. The RAM was established in 2012 and provides master's and doctoral programs; its leader is Geun Kim. Combined, the JBNU iSchool currently has 12 doctoral students, 82 master’s students and 150 undergraduates.
In applying for membership, the JBNU noted that many of their faculty have degrees from and/or have worked at established and well-respected iSchools, including the University of Maryland, University of California at Los Angeles, University of North Texas, and the University of South Florida. Having already experienced the benefits of being part of the iSchool network, and those faculty members expressed an eagerness to share those benefits with other JBNU faculty members. JBNU has joined the iSchools organization at the Basic level.
The iSchools organization was founded almost two decades ago. The iSchools educate thought-leaders of the future, and their researchers focus on enhancing the lives of people, the productivity of companies, the innovation cycles of industries, the design of technologies, the policies that govern technology and information use, information services to communities, and much more.
