The program is looking for faculty who study social policy with a critical focus on inequality and power structures in society. The first position is for a scholar who employs applied data science and whose scholarship may be informed by or engage in critical data studies, critical race and digital studies, critical race and policy studies, new media studies, platform studies, critical HCI, or other areas of critical studies on data and computation, including those studying these issues from a global perspective. Applicants for this position should have a background in data science, econometrics, statistics, quantitative political science, computational social science, computational linguistics, human-computer interaction, societal computing, or other related areas. Of particular interest are scholars doing research in the areas of ethics in AI, data and tech policy, linked administrative data, civic tech or public interest tech, the intersections of data science with social work, politics, economics, public health, and/or criminal justice among others.

University at Albany, Center of Excellence

The Center of Excellence is a state-funded organization that focuses on “realworld” problems in New York state. This particular work is a NOAA funded project that includes scientists with backgrounds in meteorology, modeling, communications, hazard assessment and mitigation, and more. This position will work extensively with observations from the New York State Mesonet (NYSM), as well as networks maintained by the NYSM such as the Con Edison micronet. Other networks of opportunity such as ASOS will also be used. Original research will be conducted analyzing the ability existing modeling systems have in reproducing observed distributions of extreme temperatures in NYC, and attempt to relate these results to weather regime and/or forecast time horizon. Concurrently, an informational website designed for use primarily by the National Weather Service and NYC Emergency Management will be created which will incorporate results from the aforementioned research as well as real-time products to aid understanding of the distribution of extreme temperatures within NYC during and before events.

The Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI Center) at Pratt Institute is a mapping and analytics research hub that untangles the complexity of data in the human context through research and design. Its many projects focus on supporting cultural arts organizations, non-profits, and government agencies in conducting data analysis and mapping, creating interactive graphics illustrating key indicators; and conducting much needed multi-day GIS training workshops for various departments in Pratt and organizations outside of Pratt.
